Easy Plants for Beginners

The Perfect Low-Maintenance Plants for Your Space

It can be overwhelming picking out your first house plant, especially if you have a busy schedule. There are so many options, and some plants need lots of light, watering, or attention to thrive. But… they add so much to a space!

The good news is, a lot of popular houseplants are actually pretty easygoing. They don’t demand much sun and can handle a little forgetfulness when it comes to watering. We carry almost all of these options below on a regular basis - just give us a call or stop by for our specific inventory. Here’s what we recommend:

Blooming Plants

  • Anthurium (Anthurium andraeanum), also called the Flamingo Flower, is famous for its bright “flowers” that are actually colorful leaf bracts. They bloom for months and can handle lower light, just keep them out of direct sun

  • Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum), often mistaken for just a green plant, actually blooms white flowers and is a champ at cleaning indoor air. It’s very forgiving if you forget to water once in a while. Can also be called a spath.

  • Poinsettias (Euphorbia pulcherrima), seasonal stars, brighten up the winter holidays with their red and white leaves. Keep them indoors away from drafts to last longer. Once the petals fall off, keeping them as a green plant is super easy.

Green Plants

  • Parlour Palm (Chamaedorea elegans) is a low-light, low-maintenance plant that grows slowly and stays compact. Fun fact: it was a popular Victorian-era houseplant because it thrives indoors with little fuss.

  • Pothos (Epipremnum aureum), including the bright Neon Pothos, are basically the superheroes of houseplants. They grow fast, thrive on neglect, and are super forgiving. Probably my personal top pick for anyone new to plants! Their long, trailing vines add a cool, relaxed feel to any space and its so satisfying to see them grow and grow with so little attention.

  • Prayer Plant (Maranta leuconeura) is named because its leaves fold up at night like hands in prayer. It’s a beautiful little plant that likes indirect light and humidity.

  • Fiddle Leaf Fig (Ficus lyrata) is popular for its big, bold leaves, and it’s pretty tough as long as you don’t overwater.

  • Bird’s Nest Fern (Asplenium nidus) has bright, wavy green leaves that grow in a rosette shape, looking like a bird’s nest. It loves humidity and indirect light—perfect for bathrooms or shady spots.

  • Lemon Lime Dracaena (Dracaena fragrans), also called Lemon Lime Warneckii or Dragon Tree, stands out with its bright yellow and green striped leaves. It’s super easy to care for and adds a pop of color to low-light spaces.

  • Fittonia (Nerve Plant) has cool veiny leaves (sometimes pink!) and loves humidity, so it’s a great choice for bathrooms.

  • Arboricola (Schefflera) and Dracaena marginata are easygoing plants that add height and drama without much fuss.
